How can I help you with
Maker Education, Maker Centered Learning, Makerspaces

MakerEd Coaching :
I would love to work with a handful of teachers for multiple days throughout the year, planning and implementing some Maker Centered Learning experiences for their students. This would help them build the capacity to do it for themselves as well as help colleagues do the same.

Presentations (90 minutes - all day) :
(including 30-45 minute maker time to open up creativity and conversations as well as explore low cost/low tech materials to create something personal)
-Understanding what Maker Centered Learning is
You keep hearing about Maker and MakerSpaces, but are unsure how it fits in school. We will discuss definitions and descriptions of Maker Centered Learning. I will share aspects of MCL and how they look in a learning space. We will explore some of the “why” MCL is a great learning pedagogy. We will experience some of these through our Maker activity.
-What does Maker Center Learning look like across the curriculum
It is sometimes hard to see how different ideas apply to “your curriculum”.
I will share Maker Centered Learning experiences from a variety of courses and grade levels. I will also share a variety of ways to foster the Maker Mindset/Culture around the school.
-Designing Maker Centered Learning activities that help students learn grade level standards ( grouped by grade bands)
How do you get Maker into your classroom? How do you foster Curiosity, Creativity & Innovation. You have so many standards to deal with (amongst other things). You bring the standards , we work on creating a Maker Centered learning experience that gives students voice & choice & ownership and still allows you to have the content area conversations you need to have.
-Revealing the STEM around you in any content area
Science Technology Engineering & Math are present in many areas. Learning happens best in context and with the world connections. Let's find those interconnections for some of your content

Hands on workshops for students and/or teachers (90 minutes - all day)
participants need their own computer (chromebook/desktop/PC/Mac) :
-Ways to integrate the Makerspace tools you have across the curriculum
You have some tools/equipment that aren’t getting the use you anticipated or you aren't sure how they fit in “your” curriculum. I can share Maker learning experiences from my PLN. We should get our hands on the tools and make some stuff for your subjects and classrooms and talk about integrating them with your students

-Coding & Robotics (makecode, micro:bit, and Elecfreaks cutebot ; up to 20 people)
We will use makecode, a browser based coding platform to program a micro:bit, a small microcontroller. We will also use the micro:bit to run a robot, the Elecfreaks cutebot

-Coding & integrating the robotics you have
You have some robots, but they aren’t getting the use you had hoped. I can help you understand the ‘bots more , we can work on creating some coding/robotics experiences, as well as come up with ways to integrate them into the curriculum. I have worked with Edison, Sphero, Dot-Dash-Cue, Hummingbird, UBTech Intermediate Kit, Circuit Playground Express.

-Coding & Designing with Turtle art (blocks or python)
Turtle Art is a programming idea that started in the 1960’s. The Turtle only knows about making art (drawing), so the vocabulary/commands are limited. It is a great way to explore the logic of coding, design, images, angles, symmetry…lots of ideas. The artwork can be printed or exported to use in a 3D printer, vinyl cutter, laser cutter. Or you could step up to Turtle Stitch and an embroidery machine.

-3D design with Tinkercad (beginning and intermediate)
Tinkercad is a browser based 3D design site that is the start of 3D printing. It is a pretty powerful site. You don't HAVE to print the designs, but that is part of the draw - getting a physical artefact that you designed. Kids can design things for almost any subject matter. If you can’t print, students can turn in screenshots or export them to AR/VR.
-Helping you utilize your current 3D printers better
Your 3D printers are idle more than they are printing. I will help you explore why and how to have your students use them more in their learning. I will also make sure you are comfortable with the printers. I have worked with Dremel, Ender, Flashforge and Lulzbot printers, but all brands are similar.

-Design learning items with Cricut Air 2
(PC/Mac needed for Cricut software)
I think every school should have several of these craft cutters (or the Silhouette brand). They can cut paper, foodbox cardboard and vinyl. Students work with creating precise designs. Your students can make stickers, t-shirts, candle boxes...think "imagery". Let's learn how to use the Cricut and talk about ways you can have it be part of their learning experiences.

-Wired circuits and paper circuits (no devices needed)
Everything is better with colored lights. We will learn about basic circuits and
how a simple "watch" battery and LED (light emitting diode) combo can jazz up an image, a model, a piece of artwork

-Getting your STEM & Maker stuff off the shelf and into your students hands
You worked hard to get the funds, you bought some equipment, tools, and materials. But they are no longer being used. Maybe someone before you bought items and you just found them on a shelf. I will help you get them off the shelf and integrate them into your learning experiences.
